What is the name of the project?
Najidah Room/Support Services

How does the project help homeless women?
Najidah provides accommodation to women and children affected by domestic and family violence.  In 2011 Second Chance sponsored a room at the Najidah Refuge on the Sunshine Coast. The Second Chance sponsorship allows for additional holistic support services for the women who stay in the room.  Through this, the women are supported to develop necessary support networks and resources required to “break the cycle” of homelessness.  Following the success of the first year, Second Chance agreed to sponsor a second bedroom in 2012.

Outcomes of the project
8 women were supported through the sponsored room in 2011, with 349 nights’ accommodation provided in the sponsored room in 2011.  75% of all women who have stayed in the room have broken the cycle of homelessness and moved on to sustainable independent living.

“Thank you for all the wonderful support you have given me over the last few weeks. I couldn’t have done this without you. You have given me the courage and strength to stand on my own two feet and face the most difficult challenges I have ever had to face. I feel much protected, safe and secure with all the love and warmth you have shown me and the girls. I will always remember this as a very special time.”
